Among the many noteworthy board diversity statistics revealed in the “Q1 2022 Key Findings” from 50/50 Women on Boards are:

  • 42% of the 677 directors who joined Russell 3000 boards in the first quarter were women, which is up 1% year-over-year, but down about 6% from the third and fourth quarters of 2021.
  • 88% of the seats (up 1% from the fourth quarter of 2021) filled by women were additive, i.e., the boards increased in size to accommodate the new director.
  • 26% of directors self-disclosed their race and ethnicity in the first quarter of 2022, up 5% from the fourth quarter of 2021 and 9% from the second quarter of 2021.
  • New directors self-disclose their race at a much higher rate than directors overall (36% vs. 26%, respectively) and are more racially diverse than the director population as a whole.
