Investor Alliance Launches Anti-Plastic Engagement Campaign

By Randi Morrison posted 06-20-2018 05:39 PM

As You Sow announced the launch of the Plastic Solutions Investor Alliance - a coalition of  25 international "socially conscious" investors - including Hermes Investment Management, ICCR, Pax World Funds, and Walden Asset Management - aimed at mitigating risks associated with plastic pollution via public company engagement. The Alliance will initially focus on engaging with large international consumer goods companies Nestle, PepsiCo, P&G, and Unilever on plastic packaging, which purportedly is the largest "single use" category representing 25% of the (fossil fuel-derived) plastic market.

The campaign will call on these and other companies using plastic packaging to:

  • Transition plastic packaging to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable to the fullest extent possible
  • Disclose annual plastic packaging use
  • Set plastic use reduction goals
  • Develop alternatives to plastic for packaging purposes, especially for single use packaging
  • Acknowledge responsibility and play a significant role in funding and facilitating collection and recycling or composting of packaging in markets where they operate (i.e. producer responsibility)
  • Support public policy measures on reducing plastic waste and broadening producer responsibility
  • Accelerate research on the potential for technology and innovation to provide solutions
