“Global Trends in Women’s Corporate Leadership 2026” from ISS Corporate reports on female directorships and board leadership positions worldwide, with US Russell 3000 (R3000) companies closely tracking global averages for both the number of women on boards and proportion of boards occupied by women directors (at 2.5 and 28%, respectively, for the R3000, compared to 2.6 and 29% globally). Board leadership roles for women continue to lag directorships, with an average of 1.1 such roles occupied by women on R3000 boards versus the global average of one, with “board leadership role” being defined as the board chair, lead director, or the chair of any of the audit, compensation, or nominating committees.
