Founded in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers, the Nasdaq is the world's second largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies. To become and remain listed on the exchange, a company must meet specific quantitative (objective financial and share distribution criteria) and qualitative (corporate governance and ongoing status) standards. Generally, NASDAQ standards of corporate governance are more flexible and accommodating to less mature companies than the NYSE governance standards.
