A recent member-requested Society Quick Survey on board retreats, which garnered responses from nearly 150 issuer-members, revealed that companies most commonly hold dedicated board retreats once/year (41%); another approximately 18% hold them less than once/year. However, 34% never conduct such a retreat.
For those that hold such retreats, two full days is the most common duration (54%), and that retreat most commonly also encompasses the board's annual strategic review (~64%). The vast majority of corporate secretaries, whether or not they are also the GC, CLO or other function head, attend the board retreats.
