Consistent with (but not duplicative of) last week’s report: “How to Talk About ESG in 2023,” The Conference Board’s “How Companies Can Address ESG Backlash” provides actionable guidance to companies, informed by recent benchmarking, on tactics to pursue their sustainability objectives in the context of an increasingly politicized and polarizing pro- and anti-ESG environment. Among the many suggestions are to communicate and respond objectively and factually (rather than emotionally); refocus or remain focused on the connection between corporate ESG practices/initiatives and shareholder value; discontinue use of the “ESG” acronym in favor of terminology that resonates better with relevant stakeholders; and engage and strategize with like-minded groups.
