The G&A Institute announced that 98% of the S&P 500 and 90% of the Russell 1000—including 82% of the smallest 500 companies in the index (up from 68% in 2021)—published sustainability or corporate responsibility reports in 2022.

According to the report (complimentary download here), of Russell 1000 reporting companies: (i) 54% used or referenced the
GRI standards (60% of the S&P 500, compared to 40% of smaller half of Russell 1000); (ii) 84% mentioned or reported in alignment with SASB (78% align with and 6% simply mention); (iii) 64% mentioned or reported in alignment with the TCFD recommendations (50% align with and 14% simply mention); (iv) 52% aligned with specific Sustainable Development Goals; and (v) 53% responded to the CDP Climate Change questionnaire (74% of the S&P 500, compared to 32% of smaller half of Russell 1000).

Moreover, 40% of Russell 1000 companies included some sort of external assurance, as depicted here:

By company size, 40% of the Russell 1000, 21% of the smallest half by market cap, and 57% of the largest half by market cap (S&P 500), sought external assurance.

Non-reporting companies by sector are summarized on page 20 of the report. Most statistics are reported for each of the full Russell 1000, the S&P 500 (or largest “half” by market cap, consisting of 499 companies), and the smallest “half” by market cap (consisting of 502 companies).
